Is My Music Okay?
Every Wednesday, even before 1989, school “made” me go to the philharmonic. I had to buy a season ticket, just like I had to contribute to the class fund, or the way I now pay that mysterious reserve fund on my maintenance bill.
At first, the whole idea annoyed me and I got into an argument with the teacher who sold the tickets. Just as I imagined the people working at gas stations must be filthy rich, considering all the money they took in, this teacher had to be rolling in it too! And that sort of thing was bad under communism—that’s what we’d learned at school. So I made a fuss and said I wasn’t buying any more tickets. Not only did she refuse to accept that, but my parents were called in to school to be told off because of me.
Over time—that is, after 12 years of going to the philharmonic almost every week—I came to appreciate and love classical music, and to feel grateful to my fifth-grade teacher, the one with the tickets. I built up a store of musical knowledge that makes me see every kind of music differently.
Sometime in high school, I became addicted to MTV. I had the TV on in the morning, nothing unusual there, but from the moment I got home until late at night, the TV in my room was tuned to MTV. At one point, I realized I could recognize any music video they played during that period. To be fair, ’90s music was different; I was almost sorry whenever I had to tear myself away from “European Top 20” or “3 for 1.”
These days, I hardly listen to music anymore. I have a playlist on my iPhone with the generic name “Chillout,” which I listen to before falling asleep. Sometimes in the car, when the radio gets on my nerves or I have a longer drive ahead of me (read: I’m stuck in traffic), I listen to something a little more lively, like rock.
At work, I’m stuck in an open-fucking-space™ and can’t really listen to anything, and when I get home, I’d rather take Athos out for a walk than stay cooped up indoors listening to music.
Thank goodness for YouTube, Last.fm, and eOK, because television is pretty much a closed chapter for me.
My music isn’t okay. My music is starting to disappear. And that makes me sad. Very sad.

Iata inca o dovada ca“tot Banatu-i fruncea!”.
